The Lattice Mural
Created using approximately 800 hand-pressed ceramic tiles repeated over a 264 square foot section of exterior wall surface, this public project is a testament to the power of the human hand. Attached to each tile is hardware and a ceramic bead suspended from chain. Each bead rests in the center of the repeated diamond shape, recalling the symbol of "el ojo" or "the eye". “El Ojo”, or “El Ojo Mal” (“The Eye” and “The Evil Eye”), symbolize a practice of caring for ourselves and for strangers. This mural, built in collaboration with the City of Laredo, The Gold Coin business who owns the building, and the community members of Laredo, was designed to honor the community and remind us to take care for each other.
